As of 2020, the ADA or American’s with Disabilities Act will hit its 30th year in effect. Unfortunately, even over the course of 30 years, there are numerous buildings throughout many metropolitans, cities, and rural areas that don’t meet disabled standards. Building standards are part of an overarching planning issue that building contractors, city officials, and business owners share.
Most businesses aren’t sure whether they hit every compliance requirement until they face a lawsuit, or have an inspection completed. Some will clearly accommodate wheelchairs but have ramps that are much too steep, elevator buttons that are much too high or are outright inaccessible.
For anyone facing mobility affecting disabilities, there are concerns about being able to open doors or navigate into the appropriate restroom where they can be comfortable without unnecessary assistance. These are only a few instances that impact people in wheelchairs every day. Asking people to open doors isn’t something that other people within the public have to do to get around.
Atlanta is proud to be home to developers who are launching an app to help mobility-disabled person rate businesses and buildings. Ultimately the goal is to help people in wheelchairs locate restaurants, events, clubs, and any other form of building that is fully able to accommodate them. The creator and idea-man of the app were paralyzed at the waist when he was just 14-years-old. Quickly he had to learn how to adapt, but that there were many situations that just weren’t reasonable or able to accommodate him.
The goal of the app is to provide an interactive tool for people with mobility impairments. Down the road, the developers are looking to expand in ways that can aid people with hearing and visual disabilities as well. Using technology to combat the inconveniences and daily struggles of the people within the disabled community.
